I actually did. Patients in our hospital were going outside and crossing a road, in freezing weather, to get their "fix."

As a former smoker, I thought it cruel.

Yes Mark I did, because the roll out unjustly affected patients I cared about, 90 year old fisherman smoked all his life, slapped in hospital AND restrained because he tried to get out of bed for a smoke, eventually did, fell and broke his hip other stories every bit as bed, perhaps even worse

Weird that as a non-smoker I was having arguments with smokers that such bans were unjustified. I felt as though they were an infringement on the rights of businesses to define how they conducted business while the smokers I was arguing against thought that it was a public health issue. I don’t like a smokey establishment, but I respect that I’m not their clientele. If smokeless establishments are an ideal scenario, then there is a market opportunity for those that decide to run such establishments.

My husband and I, both non smokers and children of non smokers, spoke with people in Pittsburgh about this being a bad thing in the mid 2000’s right before the city imposed its smoking ban. We both knew that smoking bans were just the beginning of bans on various things. In the 2000’s smoking bans became

About protecting bar and restaurant workers. People don’t understand that a prohibition against a behavior that you simply don’t like will lead to others. It’s actually in principle comparable to shutting people down on social media. The attitude is that if I don’t like what you are saying or doing so I shouldn’t have to experience any discomfort of any kind.

I remember voting against the smoking bans in our state 20 years ago. I didn't like going to smoke filled bars/restaurants, but I understood the businesses should have the freedom to decide. Tyranny of the majority.

I’ve been fighting them and going out of my way to disobey them my entire life. Every ounce of freedom in every arena is crucial. It’s the principle.

I did not speak out against the UK government introducing a ban here.

Today, I am somewhat ashamed that I didn’t, though I regard it as a little less egregious than the crime committed by those not speaking out against much of what has happened lately.

I doubt I am alone in stating that if the smoking ban was being contemplated today, I would vociferously oppose it (though a non smoker myself).

Fair enough.

"Hate speech" is another test case. Nazis, communists, and racists should have freedom of speech, not just people we agree with.

Here's another one: Have you been speaking out in favor of legalizing marijuana, narcotics, and other prohibited drugs for the past 25 years, even if you don't personally use them?

I did and I still do, even though I quit smoking 20 years ago. Passive smoking is a scam, and treating vaping as if it's the same as cigarettes is harmful.
