I think survival of the fittest is very intuitive, as is reproduction of the survivors. Not really seeing the problem here.

Doubts about evolution are driven chiefly by gaps in the theory itself - the failure (so far) of evolution theory to convincingly address the Cambrian Explosion, irreducible complexity, and the like. I don't think it's ever a failure of intuition, either for religious folk, or nonreligious.

Alllmost random super tiny modifications can, over time, create super intelligent brains. …is fantastically amazingly bonkers in its level of claim and counterintuitiveness, and it’s only not counterintuitive because you grew up when you did. Even the non-religious scientists of Darwin’s day had heaps of trouble buying into even the notion.
