Why are they intent on believing in masks?

On masks, anyone not under the sway of a moral panic immediately realized they were useless.

(1) Respiratory viruses spread via smoke-like aerosols.

(2) It takes only a few hundred virus particles breathed in to get infected, but a minute of talking wafts out about a million particles.

(3) No one in normal life wears an N95 mask sealed to the face (nor should they).

(4) Even small gaps will be the paths of least resistance through which disproportionate amounts will blow through.

Those within the mass delusion post-hoc generated a cottage industry of “Mask Science” overturning the evidence prior to 2020, and even up through around June of 2020.
