I keep hearing extreme pro-lifers pose the abortion issue as if it only concerns the fetus.
If that were the ONLY relevant issue, then we should indeed just ignore any of the developmental complexities and err on the side of caution: ban abortion at conception. No down side!
Hmmm, if you lived through the last two years of Covid, you should be afraid of any position that claims to have no down sides.
The down side of erring on the developmentally early side concerns freedom, civil liberties, bodily autonomy and authoritarianism, consequences akin to what we have been struggling with since Covid.
The ethical solution concerns all the complexities, and every shift in “weeks abortion is allowed” has costs and benefits. How quickly we forget.
The pro-lifers are a particularly hypocritical bunch, from my experience.
