Pity that so many people (as far as I know) believe in the consequentialist argument that justifies Box 3.

It's the inevitable outcome of a materialist society that believes human life is itself the highest ultimate good, and that no principle is worth upholding if it costs human lives to do so; better to live on one's knees than to die on one's feet, since there is always the chance you may be able to get up again as long as you are still alive.

The problem with this disquietingly plausible logic is that in practice, being able to outwait oppression without fighting it almost always relies on others making the sacrifices one finds too impractical to make oneself.
