The hearing impaired were disproportionately affected by mask mandates
Four Moment videos on why
1/ How masks partially deafen the wearer. Moment 140
2/ Why do deaf people show so much emotion on their face when talking? (...and thus why masks disproportionately handicap their emotional expressiveness.) Moment 161
3/ How face masks further socially quarantined the deaf. Moment 170
4/ Four reasons why you have trouble hearing those wearing masks, and why this is therefore a disproportionate issue for the hard of hearing. Moment 141
Mark you show more insight and compassion than ANY of the experts I personally interacted with during the mandates. This includes the school speech and language therapist for my hearing and speech impaired child with Down Syndrome, his developmental optometrist who refused to see him because he couldn’t wear a mask properly for exam, my child’s ENT, my Otologist and audiologist. I can’t express the hurt and anger I have from being abandoned by those professionals who should understand these nuances and advocate for those hearing and speech impaired. Gigis Playhouse and the local Down Syndrome groups abandoned their duties by requiring masks, to appease their donors and the uneducated portion of their clients. I plan to forward this substack to some of these professionals. However, these some of these doctors are still masked. ITS A CRUEL WORLD.
I always thought this. It was a horrible time for everyone and hard to communicate but for them it had to have been so much worse.
