The Far Left has a problem with romanticizing the greatest evils in history. And this is not a fringe thing: your typical undergrad Leftist will have a conspicuous poster of one on his or her wall.
Buckle up as we go through some Leftist heroes, which span not just the usual Communists, but also Islamofascists.
(1) Joseph Stalin (Soviet Union) – Some Western Marxist academics and activists still defend Stalin as a “necessary force” for industrializing the USSR and defeating the Nazis, despite his purges and forced famines. Some even wear Stalin shirts at leftist rallies.
(2) Mao Zedong (China) – Mao’s Little Red Book became a countercultural symbol in the 1960s, embraced by radicals in the West who overlooked the tens of millions who perished in the Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution.
(3) Pol Pot (Cambodia) – Noam Chomsky initially downplayed reports of Khmer Rouge atrocities, suggesting they were exaggerated Western propaganda, despite Pol Pot’s genocide being one of the worst in history.
(4) Ho Chi Minh (Vietnam) – Often depicted as a nationalist freedom fighter, many ignore his use of reeducation camps and mass executions of political opponents after seizing power. His portrait is still a symbol in leftist demonstrations.
(5) Fidel Castro (Cuba) – Celebrities and politicians like Michael Moore, Jeremy Corbyn, and Sean Penn praised Castro’s healthcare and education policies while ignoring his brutal suppression of dissent and mass imprisonment of political opponents.
(6) Che Guevara (Argentina/Cuba) – His face is printed on countless t-shirts, posters, and murals, symbolizing “revolutionary cool,” even though he personally oversaw executions, opposed free speech, and sought to impose communist rule globally.
(7) Hugo Chávez (Venezuela) – Figures like Bernie Sanders and Jeremy Corbyn praised Chávez’s socialist programs while ignoring his dismantling of Venezuela’s democracy and economic ruin.
(8) Robert Mugabe (Zimbabwe) – Some leftists excused his mass land confiscations and economic collapse as a justified “fight against colonialism,” ignoring his violent suppression of dissent.
(9) Daniel Ortega (Nicaragua) – Once a leftist icon for resisting U.S. intervention, Ortega is still defended by some despite imprisoning political opponents and crushing protests.
(10) Vladimir Lenin (Soviet Union) – His image remains a revolutionary symbol, despite founding the secret police, the Gulag system, and the mass killings of the Red Terror.
(11) Hamas – Some leftist activists and student groups portray Hamas as a “resistance movement” while ignoring its terrorism, human rights abuses, and execution of political opponents in Gaza.
(12) Hezbollah – Frequently praised as an “anti-imperialist force” against Israel and the U.S., even though it has bombed civilians, assassinated political rivals, and serves as an Iranian proxy destabilizing Lebanon.
(13) The Islamic Republic of Iran – Some leftist academics and politicians have framed Iran as a victim of Western aggression while ignoring its oppression of women, mass executions, and support for terrorism.
(14) Osama bin Laden (Al-Qaeda) – Some far-left commentators absurdly framed bin Laden as a “rebel against U.S. imperialism,” downplaying his responsibility for 9/11 and other mass murders.
