The "experts" are out again, this time with ingenious government interventions to save us from ChatGPT AI doom
Little Known Fact: When light bulbs first became available, they were called “BulbsGPT,” and candlestick makers pressured the State to pause their further development for the good of society.
Funny because it’s true about light bulbs…
…and now its looking to be true about ChatGPT etc. as well.
Many super brilliant academic types are again in a panic. But rather than public health experts trying to save the world with their ingenious scheme, it’s comp-savvy experts trying to save us from the dangers of ChatGPT, demanding all AI labs put a pause on its development.
For how long?
Just six months.
These new technologies are tools. As with all revolutionary tools, they will lead to temporary displacement in the market that will be offset by disproportionate economic growth.
And in this case, the technology will empower billions of individuals. It’s an equalizer.
Put it on pause, and only governments will have access to the next versions — because don’t ever believe that governments will stop their development of it.
Will other countries stop?
No. You’ll just lose access.
As with all do-gooders, their ingenious scheme invariably involves using the power of the state, and, if allowed to happen, onerous regulations on the technology will spring forth, ensuring you and I have disproportionately handicapped access to it.
“But this time it’s different! It’s super powerful AI!”
The craze around light bulbs sounds silly today, but that groundbreaking technology managed to reproduce the power of the celestial sun itself, of fire itself, something crucial to all societies.
It’s always different.
But it’s always the same.

I'm no fan of more government but there's a big difference between going from candles to a lightbulb and from controlled software to possibly uncontrolled software. I don't want to see progress/research hindered but I thin it is far to require those doing teh research to do so with care and caution. There's a reason you aren't allowed to build a nuclear bomb in your garage even if you do know how to. What you do poses risk to others so it has to be done with caution and unfortunately as the Internet Of Things has proven repeatedly, security is never these guys first or even second priority but last.
