Somehow I’ve managed to do a hundred Science Moments on free expression but miss the largest point of all, something that’s at the heart of why we have emotional expressions in the first place.

Both are essential for the survival of homo sapiens. Suppressing one or the other will always lead to the same outcome, oppression, enslavement, genocide, or extinction of our species. Violence is an intrinsic part of the emotional expression of human beings. It is not about choosing either, the point is finding the right balance between the two but not losing one or the other.
