Masks and vax mandates are political purity tests banishing the unclean enemy

In this Twitter thread of mine from Oct 19, 2021, I describe how mask and vaccine mandates served a very effective function: the cancellation of non-Covid-cult members.
“Mask and vaccine mandates are epidemiologically illogical, and amount to political purity tests.
Masks don’t slow spread, and, even if they did, the manner in which they’re employed in practice would undermine it. Gaps all around, wearing them only when not sitting at a restaurant, etc.. And there are clear risks.
Vaccines don’t slow spread, and mandates undermine the societal benefit by encouraging the unvaccinated to cluster. And there are clear risks, especially relevant for those who have already recovered from Covid, or the young who have essentially zero risk from Covid.
But mask and vaccination mandates function exquisitely as political purity tests, which have two key functions…
(a) Induce our political enemies to reveal themselves: Because mandatory masks and vaxxes are believed to be (and are) epidemiologically illogical by our opponents, and are perceived to have (and do have!) costs, our political opponents won’t be willing to mask up and vax up just to be part of our team. Boom! We know who they are.
(b) Banish our political opponents: Not only do we now know who they are, but we’re positioned to banish them from society. The ultimate cancellation. Either we mandate it, ordered top down from the government. Or, we coax most businesses to require masks & vaxxes, which of course they should be allowed to do because they’re a private business (even though we’re also totally cool with coercing private companies to do it). We have the cover we need. We’re calling it a a safety measure, but its true function is the elimination of our enemies.
This is not going to happen. It already happened folks.”
