I get many letters from all around the world. The story is mostly the same: shock at how their family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and countrymen could so suddenly take to authoritarianism. Below is a recent letter from someone fighting this in Australia.
========
Hi Mark
Thanks for being a rational thinker in this chaotic period. History will remember people like yourself that shone a light into the darkness.
I wanted to give you an update on the situation here in Australia, written from the perspective of my reality. I’m concerned about the direction in which we are heading. I’m not privy to any high-level discussions (e.g. government or medical). Therefore, I make the disclaimer that I may be unaware of critical information which is underpinning our COVID approach and I may also be limited in my ability to understand the decisions. There does not appear to be an holistic approach for addressing our current situation. I’m observing what seems to be a lack of logic in the policies and processes, and I'm witnessing fear-based reactions in the general public.
A little about myself - I’m a Gen Xer, so I grew up left to my own devices, assessing and managing risk. I’m an accountant; capable of digesting large volumes of data and seeing trends. In 2001, I was issued with a letter from a neurologist recommending that I refrain from future vaccinations after experiencing a neurological reaction (brachial neuritis) to a vaccination. The neurologist provided advice to my doctor in a letter which stated "I would be very reticent about vaccinating her at all in the future ... she may have a much more violent neuritis in the future if she is re-exposed". He explained to me that he had seen cases of blindness caused by vaccination. For the past 20 years, I have been consciously aware that the nerves in my left arm don't feel quite the same as the right arm (although my symptoms have lessened in severity over the years).
I support the use of vaccination for anyone that wants to receive the vaccine. Thankfully the short-term results in Australia have shown a reduction in COVID total cases and severity through the use of vaccination. I’m also incredibly grateful to all the front-line workers who have worked tirelessly during this stressful period.
I'm deeply saddened to witness the devastation as COVID has swept across the globe. There have been so many families that have lost loved ones, children have been orphaned and many are still suffering the long-term effects from COVID. I hope my message is not viewed as flippant and does not in any way minimize the pain and suffering being experienced by those families touched by COVID. My intention is not cause offence; rather it is to highlight the personal impact of the public 'emergency' measures and question our strategic approach.
I've summarized below the issues that I’m observing in Australia.
1. Coercion by authorities
Our Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, told Neil Mitchell (3AW radio on 7/29/21) that vaccination would not be made mandatory.
The individual States around Australia, led by Premiers, proceeded to implement their own restrictions for the unvaccinated. These policies severely restrict movements and job opportunities. Many people have been coerced into getting vaccinated i.e. business-imposed vaccination mandates of 'no jab, no job'. It will be interesting to see the future legal implications for these work mandated decisions if the long term vaccine data demonstrates long term adverse health impacts in the vaccinated population.
Below are extracts of public statements to show sentiment towards the unvaccinated:
'you are being extremely selfish'
'going to put health staff at risk'
'come into hospital and get paid for by taxpayers'
'stubborn, uncaring people who have no intention of protecting their family and community from a deadly virus'
These type of statements are written ad nauseam in the media.
I could possibly understand the high-pressure tactics (ethics, legal and financial considerations aside) if these vaccines were sterilizing and we had an opportunity to eradicate this virus. However, the current crop of vaccines are leaky and there is a significant reduction in effectiveness within a short period of time; so, I can’t reconcile the data with the bullying and aggressive behavior that I’m witnessing.
2. Hostility towards the unvaccinated by individuals in the community
In a recent Facebook post on my local community page, a lady was ‘gobsmacked’ that she may inadvertently sit next to an unvaccinated person in the dentist waiting room. She suggested the unvaccinated have their own time slot at the end of the day, so as not to pose a risk to the vaccinated. The post was subsequently removed given it descended into abuse, as you can imagine. It was unbelievable to read a large portion of comments supporting this type of discrimination. It disturbed me that someone could think that this post was socially acceptable in a civilized society. Values such as respect and 'fair go' have always been part of Australia's common democratic way of life. Where is the presence of psychiatric and psychological representatives to mitigate this type of catastrophic thinking within the community? My suburb is one of the highest vaccinated suburbs in my city. There have been 75 total COVID cases in my suburb since the start of this pandemic (approx. 30k resident population).
There was a Facebook post shortly afterwards from someone else asking the community how to access a COVID testing centre without a car (venues here are commonly drive through). Would you believe there were multiple suggestions to catch a bus to our nearest hospital? Not a single person suggested this wasn’t an appropriate strategy if you suspect you have COVID (infection control 101).
Recently whilst getting my annual car registration check, I was informed that I could not sit inside due to my vaccination status. Instead I needed to wait outside. Unfortunately, it was a rainy, windy, and unseasonably cold day. I hadn't realized I wouldn't be allowed to wait inside, so I wasn't dressed appropriately for the weather. My first reaction was that I could wait in a coffee shop, but then I remembered I wasn't allowed inside hospitality venues. So, I walked around outside in the rain until I couldn't tolerate it anymore and returned to wait in the driveway of the car showroom. The service man said he felt guilty watching me shiver after being left outside in the rain, but said he was "just following instructions".
3. Silencing of professionals and experts
Despite me having a letter from a (now retired) neurologist recommending refraining from future vaccinations, I was unable recently to get a medical vaccination exemption from my doctor. His secretary is receiving 100 phone calls a day from people shopping around for medical exemptions and this has been going on for months; so, understandably he has implemented a blanket ban on issuing exemptions.
Doctors have been given instructions from their governing body regarding the issuance of medical exemptions and potential for investigations. This is standard thoughtful practice to prevent issues e.g. doctors are regularly advised not to issue too many antibiotic or opiate prescriptions. However, I wonder whether this recent correspondence regarding vaccination is impacting a doctor’s ability to act in their patient’s best interests, given I'm seeing so many people searching for a medical exemption (and if you are lucky enough to find one, it's spoken about in hushed tones).
If I shopped around long enough, I could probably obtain a temporary medical exemption certificate as I have a letter from 2001 (noting it would only entitle me to a 6-month exemption according to the criteria from our regulatory body).
I support vaccination programs and have had lots of vaccines injected into my body. I have not received the COVID vaccine because I was issued with a letter specifically advising against future vaccinations. The neurologist was rather stern in his warning to me. I am open to a discussion with a medical professional that will issue advice superseding the original advice, and thereby assume liability for any resulting adverse impacts.
I am pro-choice and pro-freedom. I have chosen to stand with the unvaccinated; referred to in social media as the 'unclean', 'evil', 'unintelligent', 'selfish', 'free-loaders' who should be 'denied medical care because of their poor choice'. I believe future generations will look unfavorably on anyone that has engaged in these silencing, discriminatory, shaming, gaslighting, coercive and bullying tactics that I'm sadly witnessing.
The passage of time creates space to enable events to be viewed through an objective lens e.g. as a child in the 70s my favorite candy was Fags (musk-flavored candy cigarettes, sold in a package that resembled a cigarette pack). Thankfully I didn't fall prey to the tactics of the smoking lobbying as the tide had started turning by the time I reached my teenage years (e.g. 1986 to 2006 - phased in bans on smoking in workplaces and public places). Anyone unfamiliar with the history of the tobacco lobbyists should read the history books; it feels like we are on a cycle of repeat.
The unvaccinated are exercising their free will. Can you think of a time in history, which when viewed in retrospect, still looks favorably on injustice, rage and oppression towards a minority group? I can only think of examples where the history books view any ill treatment unkindly e.g. Salem witch trials and the drownings at Nantes.
It's unfortunate that the mental health care sector doesn’t appear to be overly vocal and present in the media, despite being aware of the mental health crisis within their clinics.
4. Extreme restrictions for the unvaccinated
I live in Sydney (NSW), home of the iconic Opera House and Harbour Bridge. I haven’t got a 'golden ticket' i.e. valid medical exemption, so these are just some of the restrictions for unvaccinated residents in NSW:
only permitted to 'visit critical retail premises' e.g. supermarkets, petrol station, chemist and newsagency
cannot visit a hairdresser or beauty salon
cannot visit a hospitality venue, except for take away e.g. bar, cafe and restaurant
cannot visit entertainment and recreation facilities e.g. cinema
cannot attend an outdoor event
cannot attend an information and education facility e.g. art galleries, museums and libraries
There is a 10-person limit on funeral attendance
I am unable to buy in-store any non-essential items (I can visit these premises if the business chooses to offer Click-and-Collect). Purchases of alcohol, cigarettes and lottery tickets are permitted in-store. However, everyday items such as underwear, slippers and sneakers cannot be purchased in-store. I'm ‘allowed’ to go to the post office to pick up an online order, however I believe these items are best purchased in-store to ensure correct sizing.
There are signs on retail stores advising that only the vaccinated can enter (in accordance with NSW health orders).
The restrictions have been in force since mid-late June. They will remain until 15th December for all unvaccinated residents (unless NSW achieves a 95% double dosed vaccination rate earlier).
To give some context, below are statistics for NSW (source - The Sydney Morning Herald COVID-19 data centre - 11/10/21):
total daily COVID cases (NSW) - 216 (11/10/21), 222 (11/9/21) and 187 (11/8/21)
total daily COVID cases (nationally) - 1,230 (11/10/21), 1,309 (11/9/21) and 1,326 (11/8/21)
total active cases in NSW - 3,678 (and 77,212 total cases since commencement)
340 current cases admitted to hospital
78 cases in ICU (capacity 1,550 beds)
total deaths since commencement - 605 (0.78% of total cases)
90.36% fully vaccinated (16+ population)
overall population of NSW - 8.176 million
There is no guarantee the politicians will not extend the lockdown even further given the goal posts have already moved. 'Freedom day’ for the unvaccinated was due for 1st December. However, the government announced on 11/2/21 an extension of ‘freedom’ day until 12/15/21 (or 95% double dosed) to further 'incentivise’ vaccination rates. The day of the announcement was a key racing day (Melbourne Cup), otherwise known as the ‘race that stops the nation’. I question the sensitivity in timing this announcement on a day with nationwide celebrations (for the vaccinated). (sky news.com.au - David Wu - 11/2/21 - 'Premier Dominic Perrottet pushes back freedoms for unvaccinated NSW residents in a bid to 'incentivise' jab rates')
My freedoms have been significantly restricted by the NSW state government. I question the legality of exercising this type of 'emergency' power i.e. are the measures used to restrict my movements proportionate to the risk and scale of the 'emergency'?
e.g. I purchased a tea towel in the week prior to lockdown, but only realized it was damaged upon returning home. I cannot walk into the retail store to exchange this tea towel. I need to wait until after 15th December (or 95% double dosed). Where is the data and modelling to justify this restriction over such an extended period of time? Is this reasonable and sensible based on the risks of transmission in retail settings? Is this an appropriate use of power by the authorities in a first world democratic society, given the risks of this activity? Where is the 'emergency' that necessitates me having to wait for my government to grant me permission to walk inside a store and swap a faulty tea towel?
Whether deliberate or not, I feel like I'm being treated as a naughty child who is being punished for disobedience. I'm pretty sure my parents gave me more freedom as a child. Growing up, we played in the streets and surrounding bushland (often barefooted), only returning home when the street lights came on. There were risks then, like when I was approached by a man to get in his car (I said no), but we learnt how to navigate those risks. Now I can barely leave my home. Is my treatment humane, justifiable and acceptable?
I am deeply disturbed by the unfolding events in the state of Victoria, where Premier Daniel Andrews has warned unvaccinated residents may be barred from extra freedoms “for the entirety of 2022” (News.com.au article by Ally Foster on 11/2/21).
There is restricted travel between the states within Australia. We are not a cohesive country and cannot move freely within our country.
The media is now starting to promote the booster shots; so there is a risk the vaccinated will fall back into the unvaccinated category. When does this merry-go-round stop?
(News.com.au article by Frank Chung - 11/9/21 - 'We all have a responsibility to get our booster’: NSW residents told to get third jab to avoid lockdown')
5. Questionable data
With my accounting background, I appreciate data is constantly being updated and refreshed as new information and studies are brought into view. However, I have a keen interest in numbers and question the accuracy of some data presented by the media.
For one particular article, I contacted the journalist, health office, and a media fact checker site to clarify the quoted statistics, as the data did not align with my daily review of the statistics.
I am still awaiting a response that explains the findings of the study referenced in this article.
6. Lack of alternate treatments
It would appear for a long time the efforts have concentrated almost solely on promoting vaccination (along with mechanisms such as lockdowns, mask wearing, social distancing, contact tracing etc.). I would have thought a sensible approach would be a multipronged effort. For example, Australians in all but two states were only allowed to buy rapid antigen tests for home use from 1st Nov '21 (noting they had been widely used overseas for a significantly longer period).
7. Illogical policy decisions and no clear accountability
I contacted the Australian Human Rights Commission (Federal) to enquire about the restrictions in NSW. They said they do not deal with State matters. I was instructed to contact the NSW Ombudsman; who proceeded to tell me they do not deal with COVID matters. Instead, they told me to complain to the NSW government about the NSW government (i.e. back where I started). I called NSW Health who told me that waiting until 15th December wasn't that 'long' to wait (notwithstanding these measures have been in place since mid-late June). I'm confused about where accountability resides for the impact of these 'emergency' health orders. Where are the overall checks and balances, as I seem to be spinning in circles?
This virus can be life changing for many individuals (either through death, complications, long COVID etc.). However, I would prefer to die young and free, than old and controlled. I have a 100% chance of dying in the future (and this rate has not changed since my birth). Likewise, every single person currently walking on this Earth has a 100% chance of dying. Have we forgotten this fundamental truth? My personal goal is not to live a long life; it is to live a life where I follow the path set by my moral compass. I'm OK with the risks, accept the consequences of my decisions and understand that I will die at some stage; so why isn't my government OK with my choices?
The following reasons have been proposed to me to explain these restrictive measures and mandates:
the hospitals will not cope (Are the hospitals my responsibility given I have paid taxes over 35 years to fund public facilities? If the government hasn't allocated those taxes appropriately to plan for these type of events, why does the responsibility fall back to me? Why has the medical profession continued to operate over the preceding years on a shoestring budget without a buffer to cope with a disaster, knowing the emergence of a pandemic was overdue and should have been forecasted?)
I might catch COVID, pass it on and even cause someone to die (Am I responsible if I happen to somehow pass on a virus which eventually makes its way to someone, that I don't even know, who eventually dies? What is my culpability if I exercise good hygiene and stay at home when I feel sick etc.? Why do we not impose similar restrictions on movements for other contagious diseases e.g. flu? If everyone is responsible for the impact of their behavior on everyone else, then surely our political leaders are also responsible for wreaking catastrophic damage via their policies and decisions e.g. suicide, excess deaths and financial damage? Where is the consistency in our reasoning?)
I need the vaccine to get business up and running (The lockdowns have been mandated solely by the government, not me. Businesses have had adequate time to prepare for unvaccinated citizens on their premises, such as installing air purification systems)
I am being 'selfish' if I do not take the vaccine (When did questioning the loss of liberties and exercising free will in a society become selfish? When did name-calling and shaming become part of our culture? I was warned I might go blind if I receive another vaccination. My assessment is that I will cost the taxpayer less by taking my chances without being vaccinated, than becoming disabled and requiring government benefits. How is making a decision tailored to my personal situation considered selfish behavior?).
I think we need to review the roles and responsibilities of all the stakeholders e.g. government, medical, legal, media, ethicists, mental health professionals, economists, statisticians, actuaries, business representatives, historians, and ordinary citizens. It feels like I'm being overly burdened with responsibilities that aren't mine to bear, which is ultimately restricting my liberties.
Do you think societal conditioning of believing absurdities begins in our childhood with the tale of Santa Claus? I vividly remember weighing up what I had been told i.e. Santa rode his sleigh across the world, delivering presents to every household in a single evening. I looked out the window at all the houses that I could see, extrapolated the houses across the globe, and applying logic rejected the notion. I set a trap for my parents to uncover the truth. I remember feeling let down by their deceit when I caught them in the act (young children have subsequently confided in me a similar disappointment with their parents). Annoyingly, I had to stay silent and keep the charade alive for my younger sister. For many years afterwards I was shocked that so many of my peers at school took such a long time to figure it out. This whole situation is triggering those old memories i.e. our trusted carers tell untruths in "our best interests".
Large corporations often employ a 'Diversity and Inclusion' consultant promoting the necessity of an inclusive environment. I feel sorry for young children growing up today with mixed messages i.e. it's acceptable to impose separate rules and treatment (like name-calling) based on vaccination status; but discrimination of protected attributes such as race, gender, religion etc. is unacceptable. Our schools have spent vast resources combatting bullying behavior, so it is counterproductive to normalize shaming and bullying of the unvaccinated. These children are our future world leaders and these current events will shape how they behave in the future. We need to consider how this will impact the future geopolitical landscape, because our children are now learning that it is acceptable to ostracize a particular group (because they have chosen to exercise their free will). Are you inspired to live in that future world?
I think it's important to remember that whilst vaccination status is not currently a 'protected attribute' in Australia, there was a time when many of the freedoms which we now take for granted were not enshrined in law. For example, women in Australia have historically been excluded from large parts of public and political life. The rights of women (white) to vote and stand for Parliament were granted over the period 1902 - 1923. Women were not elected to the Commonwealth Parliament until 1943. Indigenous women had to wait even longer. In 1965, Australian women won the right to drink in a public bar (technically unvaccinated women cannot currently enter a bar in NSW). During the 1960s women working in the public service and in many private companies were forced to resign from their jobs when they got married. Australian history is peppered with injustice towards minority groups.
8. Balanced Scorecard
I believe everyone in Australia, including our authorities, is acting in what they perceive to be the best course of action; and I thank everyone for their contribution.
However, I’m concerned that all stakeholders haven’t been consulted adequately or allowed to provide their opinion safely and freely to achieve the best outcome. Instead, it appears an authoritarian style approach has been undertaken without fully considering the ethics or providing transparency e.g. is it ethical to lockdown to save the lives of people say mostly aged 70 years and older, whilst decimating the economy, destroying personal relationships and impacting mental health? Is it appropriate to mandate vaccination using these particular vaccines given their effectiveness, balanced against the side effects? Is it fair to vaccinate children given their risk profile to protect the more vulnerable in the community?
One major measure of success in Australia is low COVID deaths (our death rate is exceptionally low by worldwide standards). Whilst every single death is a tragedy, the zealous pursuit of this measure has come at a high price. Sadly, as I have read the social commentary, it has revealed to me an ugliness that lurks within the human soul (that I, rather naively, didn't know existed). I cannot understand the vitriol being directed towards the unvaccinated.
I support a more rounded scorecard to assess our success, which I believe would bring more harmony to the situation. I appreciate this is an exceptionally complex and shifting situation. However I seek a pathway that involves an open, robust and constructive conversation. This appears to be sorely lacking in our current approach.
If Australia was a corporation, rather than a country, the following approach (or modified version) would likely be used to address the situation:
a project team would be assembled with all of the stakeholders i.e. not highly weighted with just politicians, medical and statisticians;
roles and responsibilities would be clearly defined, with ultimate responsibility resting with the project lead i.e. Prime Minister;
the Business Continuity Plan (BCP), providing an outline of plans for a major disruption, would be dusted off. The BCP would have been prepared ahead of the disruption (planning ensures decisions are well considered and sound, rather than irrational, fear-based decisions made in panic);
a balanced scorecard would be used; comprising performance objectives, plus behaviors taken to achieve those objectives e.g. is name-calling appropriate behavior to achieve the goal of a high vaccination rate?
the risks would be stratified, rather than applying a broad brush application of risk e.g. risk by age, gender, underlying health, comorbidities etc. This risk assessment would flow through to the approach and restrictions. Both the absolute risks and relative risks would be considered to determine public policy, to avoid cherry-picking data and skewing the focus;
benchmarks would define 'emergency' conditions and provide guidance for when restrictive measures are employed e.g. does 200 total COVID cases in one day necessitate a lockdown?;
there would be regular reviews of key performance indicators (KPIs) to allow for the course to be modified in need;
there would be regular review of adherence to the values. The key values that underpin our society and social cohesion are summarized in the Australian Values Statement. Australian society values include: respect for the freedom and dignity of the individual; and a ‘fair go’ for all that embraces mutual respect, tolerance, compassion for those in need, and equality of opportunity for all;
remuneration would be linked to (i) achievement of objectives (measured by KPIs), (ii) behavior in achieving those KPIs and (iii) adherence to 'living the values';
reporting would include all measures e.g. total cases, status of vaccinated vs unvaccinated cases, COVID deaths, vaccine side effects, excess deaths due to delayed treatments, cost of lockdowns to the economy, mental health impacts, divorce statistics and cost of deaths avoided.
I can only assume this type of discussion and reporting is going on somewhere with the policy makers (this detail is not available to me). I can guarantee most citizens know the daily case and death rates; but would be unaware of the statistics for the wider impacts such as suicide rates, excess deaths, financial losses suffered by businesses and individuals, and excess debt incurred.
A robust conversation about the science and data appears to have been thwarted (science changes as new data comes to light). I have observed that people proposing alternate views to the mainstream message have been silenced. For example, 'The COVID-19 Vaccination Status (Prevention of Discrimination) Bill 2021' seeks to prohibit vaccine-related discrimination of individuals by the Commonwealth, states, territories and other entities in the provision of goods, services and facilities. The prohibition also applies to employment, education, accommodations and sports. It is a significant piece of legislation (proposed into the Senate), however, I could not find a single mention in the mainstream media when introduced (10/21/21).
What is there to fear from an opposing viewpoint? When did we lose the ability to freely discuss ideas? I don’t consider this to be a healthy approach to a highly functioning democratic society.
Where do we go from here?
On Remembrance Day (11th November) we remember those who have died or suffered for Australia's cause in all wars and armed conflicts. My grandfather (served in WW2, went MIA for many years and was eventually found in a POW camp), along with many others, made sacrifices for this country and our freedom. I benefitted from growing up in what truly was 'the lucky country'. Will my fellow Australians participate in observing a minute of silence at 11am on 11th November; and then immediately go back to engaging in their discriminatory practices ("sorry you can't enter this store")? How many will connect the dots about where all this is heading and remember that history repeats?
At school whilst studying history I pondered how ordinary German citizens could have engaged in such atrocities. It seemed such a foreign concept to me that a population could be so swept up in the propaganda to engage in indecent acts against their fellow human beings. As I read ‘The diary of Anne Frank’ I imagined what role I might have played if I had lived in that period. I remember worrying about whether I would have unwittingly participated in the inhumane acts by blindly following my government. Seeing these current events unfold, I now have greater insight into the impact of fear and how it can manifest within a society.
There are many challenges to be faced over the next decade. The world needs to join forces and unite to address those challenges, or else there is no hope. I'm fearful our current approach to these events will ultimately lead us to worsening conflict, either within or between countries. Our liberties have been removed by the governing bodies under 'emergency' orders. Additionally, there has been a breach of trust by our elected officials, which I am concerned will make the next pandemic or natural disaster even more difficult to manage (‘the boy who cried wolf’). We have unfortunately embarked on a slippery slope. If the collective doesn’t wake up soon, I fear the consequences of our inaction.
The views I've expressed are based on what I have observed and how I am personally being impacted by these measures, from the viewpoint of an ordinary citizen. My opinions have been formed largely from reading or watching content online (which can be problematic in itself).
I'd appreciate any suggestions or insights on how I can integrate what is unfolding around me and move forward.
Kind Regards

Just imagine, if the vaccines somehow weaken the people who took it, then the WILL HAVE a reason to fear the “unclean”. And given the fact that in many countries they are a majority, we will be doubling down on this. In this eventuality, my guess is that most people in the weaken category will double down into hysteria.
Can you elucidate these kinds of strategies for the totalitarians?
I am sensing now a trend to call the unvaccinated the whole reason why the vaccinated are going through severe difficulties. It seems that the fear of the vaccinated is being channeled against the unvaccinated. Which is RIDICULOUS! In all the other vaccines the fear has always been predominantly for the unvaccinated not for the vaccinated!!
If the NSW Premier is vaccinated, why didn't he post a "jab shot" on social media like the vast majority of NSW parliamentarians did to allay vaccine hesitancy? Asking for a friend.
