It’s odd how stubbornly some minds still resist two of the most powerful ideas in science — natural selection and the material basis of mind — even as the evidence now talks back from every screen.

Two old intuitions die hard: that design requires a designer, and that mind requires something more than matter. A soul, a spirit, a spark, some extra ingredient beyond matter doing work.

LLMs make both harder to defend.

First, natural selection.

LLMs are not magic. They’re the result of a brutally simple blind process: take oceans of human text, apply gradient descent — a mechanical selector that rewards what works and kills what doesn’t — and let patterns organize themselves across billions of parameters.

No one hand-coded insight, metaphor, analogy, humor, or reasoning. Tiny stupid updates accumulated until something intelligence-like emerged — fluent, creative, useful, strange, and sometimes profound.

That is natural selection made visible in silicon. Not identical to biological evolution, of course. But close enough to matter: variation, selection, inheritance — compressed into months of compute. If you still doubt that blind optimization can produce complex adaptive function without a designer, you now have an existence proof running in data centers worldwide.

Second, materialism.

These same machines behave in ways that look a hell of a lot like mind: comprehension, analogy, theory-of-mind play, self-correction, even a rough kind of introspection when pressed. Yet underneath, there is no soul-stuff. No spirit animating the machine. No ghost in the silicon.

Just matter, energy, math, and layers of computation.

Mind, it turns out, is at least material enough that we can grow a convincing facsimile of it without invoking anything beyond organized matter doing work. Maybe human consciousness has mysteries still left to solve. Of course it does. But if you want to claim intelligence itself requires some non-material spark, you now have a much harder story to tell.

For decades, we had evolutionary biology, neuroscience, and computational theories of mind. But LLMs are different. They are public, interactive, and annoyingly good at exactly the things people used to place behind the sacred human wall. You can argue with them, watch them improve, and see emergence on your own screen.

No, this does not prove that human consciousness is “nothing but computation.” And no, training an LLM is not the same thing as biological evolution. But the burden has shifted.

Blind selection can build design-like complexity. Organized matter can produce mind-like behavior. We now have machines demonstrating both, in public, every day.

So if you still want to deny either lesson, fine. But you are no longer arguing against a theory. You are arguing against an existence proof.

Since 2020, we’ve lived through some seriously unambiguous, world-level mass hysterias. First Covid. Then the Jew-hating mania that 10/7 unleashed.

And we are still in the middle of that second one — where much of the world has sided, emotionally and politically, with the Islamists who brutally crush Gazans, Lebanese, Yemenis, and Iranians. Apparently that’s all forgivable, so long as those same Islamists also kill Israelis.

If you experienced these social manias, you experienced true societal-level evil.

Not the ordinary, small-life variety of evil motivated by money, power, sex, or revenge. This is the larger, more terrifying variety: the kind where people commit evil while believing, with absolute confidence, that they are doing good.

That is the kind of evil we invented the Devil to explain.

My own notebooks — maybe seventy of them over the years — have always been where I build theories. But I realize now that what I was doing, in a sense, was using myself as an LLM: carrying on back-and-forth conversations about what was working, what wasn’t, and where the theory du jour might go next.

I often use actual LLMs that way now. They’re good at jogging my brain into the next step, usually by rephrasing my current state back to me in a slightly different way. They organize, compress, juxtapose, and remind. And then, after long back-and-forths in which I — never it, like… never — make some qualitative advance, they’re useful for summarizing the trail we just hacked through.

Eventually AI may get to the point where it begins actually making substantive theoretical steps itself, and even someday says, “Hush, dear, I got this.”

But we are nowhere near that yet.

For now, it is not the theorist. It is the notebook that talks back.

One piece of wisdom I’ve earned from decades of theory is that my success across many areas, including several seminal discoveries, is not due to thinking I’m smart.

It is due to my keen recognition that I am dumb as rocks.

Good theory can take years of grinding away at what looks hopeless. If I had too much confidence in my intelligence, I’d give up early:

“Well, I don’t see a solution. And because I’m brilliant, there must not be one.”

But I know better.

I know I can stare at a problem for years and still fail to see the obvious - the thing that, once seen, seems embarrassingly clear in retrospect.

Most hard theoretical breakthroughs are not that hard to explain afterwards. The difficulty is getting there. It doesn’t take much before a problem overwhelms our intuitions, and we collapse into barely guided trial and error, repeated untold times, until some new perspective finally clicks.

And then it feels like it was sitting there the whole time.

That’s the life of a theorist. A successful one.

Confidence.

Not confidence that you’re smart.

Confidence that you’re dumb enough to have missed the obvious.

In a simple thought experiment popularized by Tim Urban, participants face a binary choice: press the Red button or the Blue button.

The rule is straightforward: if more than 50 percent press Blue, everyone survives. If not, only those who pressed Red survive.

Logically, the rational choice is obvious: press Red. Your survival is guaranteed regardless of what others do. There is no downside to your individual action, no one is harmed by it, and your outcome is optimal without any need for coordination.

Yet astonishing numbers of people choose Blue. They opt for a path that requires fragile mass cooperation, risking everything on the hope that enough others will join them in a collective gamble.

This is not an isolated curiosity. The same flawed reasoning appears in two sharpened variants.

Imagine a flood. Each person has a personal life preserver. Keeping your own life preserver — Red — means surviving independently. Donating it — Blue — means contributing to a collective effort to build one large boat. But the boat can only be completed, and save its contributors, if more than 50 percent donate. If the threshold is not met, those who donated drown.

Or consider the Suicide Button. You receive a strange spam email with a button labeled “Suicide.” Pressing it means you’ll be dead by midnight — only press it if that’s what you want. Fine print: unless more than 50 percent also press it, in which case the button’s functionality fails.

There isn’t even a Red button. Red is simply ignoring the stupid spam email that introduced you to the Suicide Button and continuing with your life.

In all these cases, the decentralized, self-interested choice — Red, or non-participation — is unambiguously superior. Cooperation — Blue — brings no inherent benefit over individual action. It merely introduces the risk of catastrophic failure if buy-in falls short.

These variants expose a deeper truth: what appears to be a “dilemma” is not one at all in the classic sense of the Prisoner’s Dilemma. There is no holistic downside to self-interested action. Each Red choice is positive-sum in its own sphere — consensual where it interacts with others, beneficial to the actor, and imposing no costs.

Cooperation has no intrinsic advantage. At best, it approximates the baseline outcome of decentralized self-interest. Far more often, it delivers something worse. The entire setup only becomes a dilemma because of human irrationality — an instinctive pull toward the illusion of moral cooperation, even when the math and incentives scream otherwise.

And this fragility cannot be overcome by zeal. Even seeming near-universal buy-in leaves the collective gamble vulnerable. The slightest shortfall turns it into collective disaster.

This button logic maps directly onto the perennial debate between freedom and collectivism. Decentralized mechanisms — free markets, voluntary exchange, the marketplace of ideas — are the Red button. Or, in the Suicide Button variant, the decision to delete the spam and get on with life.

Logic, economics, and empirical history demonstrate that these decentralized systems are vastly superior at generating wealth, discovering truth, and sustaining functional societies. When individuals act on their own incentives, their interactions are consensual and positive-sum: both parties benefit, and no one is coerced into the scheme. There is no need for top-down coordination, central planning, or enforced narratives. Emergent order arises naturally from billions of localized decisions, producing complexity and prosperity no designer could orchestrate.

Collectivism, by contrast, is the Blue button.

It demands mass buy-in for a centralized vision — whether economic planning, enforced equality, or ideological conformity. Cooperation is not optional. It is the prerequisite for the system to function at all.

And like the Blue button, it is inherently fragile. It delivers, at best, something close to the decentralized baseline — and usually far worse. It requires reaching some critical threshold of genuine zeal — much like the 50 percent threshold in the button experiments — to avoid collapse. Below that threshold, the results are predictable and grim: poverty, famine, institutional failure.

Worse still, when the percentage of true believers dips, regimes frequently resort to coercion, propaganda, or outright democide to manufacture the appearance of support. The great crimes against humanity of the last century were not random aberrations. They were the predictable consequences of fragile collective mechanisms that could not tolerate insufficient buy-in.

The freedom-versus-collectivism debate is far more difficult for people to reason through than even the simple Red/Blue button scenario. The button setup is stripped bare: binary, immediate, life-or-death stakes, transparent rules.

Free markets and emergent order require grasping complex systems, spontaneous order, price signals, and the unseen consequences of intervention — concepts that are abstract and counter-intuitive. If humans routinely fail the button test, succumbing to the siren song of cooperation despite its obvious fragility, how much more intractable is the task of persuading them that decentralized freedom is not merely morally permissible, but practically superior?

The button experiment, in a nutshell, explains why collectivism will forever be with us. It is not that the evidence is lacking. It is that the cognitive flaw runs deeper than evidence can reach.

Ultimately, the Red versus Blue variants — whether the original poll, the life-preserver flood, or the Suicide Button — stand as powerful parables of the sickness of the human condition. They reveal a persistent, almost primal inability to trust individual reason and self-interest over the emotional pull of collective sacrifice.

This sickness ensures that collectivism, with all its fragility and catastrophic potential, will continue to haunt humanity. No matter how often decentralized systems demonstrate their superiority in raising living standards, uncovering truth, and enabling peaceful cooperation, the Blue temptation remains.

We press it again and again, betting the future on the hope that this time, enough others will join us before the boat sinks or the threshold fails.

The parable does not flatter us. It warns that this cognitive affliction is not a bug we will soon debug, but a feature of our nature — one that will shape history’s tragic cycles for as long as we remain recognizably human.

Suppose you noticed a scrappy, capable little nation in a rough neighborhood — resourceful people, a patch of desert, and a knack for improvising under pressure. How might you gently encourage them into becoming a long-term partner who advances your interests as if they were simply advancing their own?

You wouldn’t occupy them, of course. That’s crude, costly, and old-fashioned. No — the elegant move would be to strengthen them on their own terms, but in ways that align almost perfectly with yours. Start by selling them your best weapons — top-tier fighters, precision munitions, missile defenses. Train their pilots and technicians to your standards so everything plugs and plays cleanly with your own forces. Make the systems interoperable, the doctrines compatible, the upgrades dependent on your supply chain.

Over time, they come to see your success as bound up with theirs. They patrol the same threats that worry you. They test your systems in real combat and send the lessons back. They project power in the very region you care about, but without requiring you to station large numbers of your own troops there. And because they are fighting for their own survival, they do it with a ferocity, creativity, and local knowledge you could never quite reproduce with American forces in somebody else’s backyard.

Best of all, you arrange things so they buy a good deal of the hardware themselves — perhaps with some generous financing to get the ball rolling — which makes the whole thing look less like patronage and more like smart business. They become a force multiplier: your technology, their blood and soil, shared enemies, and no need for permanent American bases.

Really, someone should suggest exactly this sort of arrangement to our foreign-policy wonks. It would be a masterstroke — a huge bargain that makes America safer, extends American reach, and keeps American troops out of harm’s way. One can only hope the bright minds in Washington are imaginative enough to think of it.

But now LLMs have arrived, and for many people the first goal feels basically achieved. We have machines that talk, write, reason, code, summarize, advise, and in many settings appear strikingly intelligent. So the old pressure to understand mind at a principled level has weakened. The public sees smart-enough robots and concludes that the mystery is largely solved. Investors and product builders often care less about how intelligence works than about whether the system performs. And so the deeper project — understanding the principles of thought itself — has had the rug partly pulled out from under it. It now risks seeming “just academic.”

That irony cuts exactly the wrong way. We should care more, not less, about discovering the true principles of mind now that these systems are here. More and more of our world is beginning to run on the backs of these new minds, which makes it dangerous to remain content with mere performance while lacking real understanding of what they are doing. And unlike human minds, these minds are alien: built differently, trained differently, opaque in different ways, and not naturally interpretable through ordinary human intuitions. Theory is therefore not some optional philosophical luxury, but one of the only ways to understand what these systems are relative to us, where they genuinely overlap with human cognition, and where they do not.

There is another reason the need for principle has grown. Human minds are products of evolution, and however poorly we may understand them, we cannot redesign them from scratch. AI is different. We are actively building its successors. If we continue progressing mainly by scaling and trial and error, we may keep getting more capable systems without understanding which ingredients are essential and which are accidental. But if we can extract real principles of intelligence — representation, abstraction, reasoning, conceptual structure, agency, interpretability — then those principles could guide the next generation of AI in a far deeper way than brute-force iteration. In that sense, the scientific project has not become less relevant because AI works. It has become more urgent because AI works, because we increasingly depend on it, and because for the first time we may be able to build minds in light of theory rather than in ignorance of it.

Yesterday, countless idiots were shitting themselves that Trump had just threatened to genocide Iranians. Which is bizarre, because by now they’ve had years of exposure to Trump posts and should have learned that something else is usually going on there besides an efficient attempt to state facts, intentions, or desires with clean propositional clarity.

What Trump — ahem, his team — is often doing is not mainly declaring propositions at all. It is much closer to signaling an emotional posture. Roughly: Grrrrr about Hormuz and the Islamic regime. The point is to project aggression, seriousness, and willingness to escalate if the other side doesn’t back down. But there’s a problem. You cannot literally post a raw emotional expression. He can’t just upload a five-second clip of himself making an enraged primate face and have that function as presidential signaling.

So the emotion has to be packaged in words. But once you package it in words, it starts to look like propositional content whether or not that is the real point. And this is where these posts become distinctive: the sentences are often made to crisscross, blur, overstate, shift referents, or partly contradict themselves precisely so that the post does not function mainly as a clean declarative statement. The propositional layer is being scrambled, or at least left strategically unstable, because what matters is not crisp assertion but the emotional and strategic signal riding through it.

What the post is actually trying to convey is something more like this: if you IRGC asshats keep pushing, and if you don’t back down and meet my demands by Tuesday evening, things are going to go very badly for you. Not badly in some abstract policy-paper sense. Not fucking well at all. That is the signal. The post is carrying information not principally about a carefully delimited state of affairs, but about how aggressive the signaler is, and how serious he is about carrying that aggression through.

And that is why these posts so often confuse the literalists. They read them as though their primary job were to cleanly map sentences onto facts. But the primary job is often to move the negotiation. Emotional signals carry two big kinds of information: how hard I’m pushing, and how ready I am to call — to abandon signal and fight about it. The context — the “it” all this is about — is usually already known. Here, it’s Hormuz, the regime, the threats, the deadline, the possibility of escalation. The post is not mainly there to teach you the context. It is there to intensify the posture within that context.

So yes, you end up with posts that look proposition-like but are really doing something older and more primitive. They are sentence-shaped emotional expressions. Language is being used less to state and more to signal: to project menace, resolve, impatience, contempt, and willingness to own the consequences. If you keep expecting those posts to behave like careful declarative prose, you will keep misunderstanding them. They are much closer to an angry face that has been forced to wear paragraphs.

Israel isn’t just part of the West — it’s a peak expression of it, and arguably its wellspring.

(9) Scientific and economic integration

Deeply embedded in Western innovation, research, and defense ecosystems

(10) Civilian harm minimization norms:

Operational attempts (warnings, evacuation calls, etc.) to apply just-war principles in asymmetric conflict

(11) Anti-colonial in structure and history:

No metropole, no extraction — expansion occurs only in response to wars, with land repeatedly traded back for peace

(12) Refuge absorption, not export:

Integrated waves of refugees into a single civic society rather than maintaining permanent camps

(13) Culture of argument and critique:

A society built on debate, disagreement, and moral scrutiny—core to Western epistemic traditions

It doesn’t tell you how to think about the rest of the sociopolitical world. That’s left up to you.

So libertarianism isn’t the cause of the ethical failures we see among today’s Groyper libertarians. But it leaves plenty of room for those failures. And many have taken it.

That said, the deeper ideas behind libertarianism do have broader implications—once you actually understand them.

In particular, utilitarian defenses of libertarianism hinge on appreciating the power of decentralization. The free market isn’t just morally permitted—it’s astonishingly productive, precisely because it enables positive-sum cooperation at scale.

And once you internalize that lesson, it doesn’t stay confined to domestic policy.

Take foreign policy.

A libertarian could, in principle, advocate total isolation—everyone on self-sufficient farms, no interaction, no entanglements. That’s technically consistent with the non-aggression principle. But it completely misses one of the strongest arguments for libertarianism: that free exchange and cooperation are what make societies flourish.

That same logic applies across nations.

Isolationism rejects the enormous positive-sum gains available through international cooperation. And some of that cooperation may include the use of force—when it functions to dismantle tyranny and enable freer systems to emerge.

Last night I was invited to Sound Lux Audio Studio in Miami, set up by Eric Gould—a space devoted to cutting-edge, old-school audio where you can hear LPs and original master recordings the way they were meant to be heard. We listened to the master cut of The Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd—a stunning, almost time-travel-like experience. The level of care is extraordinary: every detail tuned to faithfully project one fleeting slice of sound from a studio long ago.

But something struck me while sitting there.

All this obsessive care about auditory “snapshots” of the past… applies to just ONE peculiar kind of sound humans make: music. And only music.

For visual snapshots, we love everything. We pore over photos of friends and family moments, childhood memories, weddings and celebrations, street scenes and daily life, historic events, portraits of strangers, travel scenes and cityscapes, candid awkward tender and mundane human moments.

But for auditory snapshots? We are almost entirely uninterested in hearing friends and family conversations, childhood voices, wedding chatter and ambient noise, street sounds and daily life, historic speeches beyond a few iconic cases, strangers talking, travel ambiance, candid awkward tender mundane moments, laughter, arguments, small talk, storytelling.

No. As I realized last night, the walls were filled with albums. The auditory past we care about is almost exclusively music—a bizarre cultural construct that, on the face of it, tells us… nothing about history at all.

And yet, it completely dominates.

Why?

This is part of the deeper mystery of music. It crowds out nearly all other auditory history—even though those other sounds are far more directly about real events, real people, real lives.

As many of you know from my earlier work and my book Harnessed: How Language and Music Mimicked Nature and Transformed Ape to Man, I’ve argued that music isn’t some abstract mathematical artifact. It has culturally evolved to sound like people—specifically, like a person moving evocatively in your midst. Human movement has a characteristic auditory grammar, and music mirrors it.

So yes—we may only be interested in one kind of auditory snapshot. But that kind is not alien at all. It’s deeply, inextricably human.

We don’t obsess over high-fidelity playback just to “hear the notes.” We do it to be more fully swept into the presence of a depicted mover—to feel them, as if they’re there with us.

And that’s why music, alone among sounds, gets preserved, polished, and revered.

A reminder that the Muslim world is not our enemy. Much of it deeply despises Islamism, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and its network of proxies.

Several Muslim-majority states have gone beyond self-defense to provide active operational support to the US-led coalition against Iran. They have granted or maintained access to critical military bases and facilities used for coalition air operations, logistics, command, and intelligence — despite explicit Iranian threats and even retaliatory strikes on some of these sites.

Key examples include:

~ Qatar — home to Al Udeid Air Base, the largest US military installation in the region and a central hub for air operations and CENTCOM activities, which it has continued to host despite Iranian attacks

~ Saudi Arabia — permitted use of Prince Sultan Air Base for US air patrols, logistics, and broader coalition support

~ United Arab Emirates — hosts Al Dhafra Air Base, supporting advanced aircraft, surveillance, drones, and intelligence operations

~ Bahrain — headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet, providing essential naval command and logistical backing

~ Kuwait — hosts Camp Arifjan, the primary US Army logistics and command hub for CENTCOM operations across the Middle East

These contributions have enabled sustained coalition activity even as Iran has targeted bases and infrastructure in retaliation. Some Gulf states have also expanded intelligence sharing and coordination with the US to counter Iranian threats and proxies.

Our true enemies are collectivism, authoritarianism, and fascism in all their forms — Islamism is just one variant. Plenty of others thrive quite comfortably in the West.

Meanwhile, several Western European countries have withheld support, restricted cooperation, or openly criticized the US–Israel coalition effort against the Islamic Republic. Spain refused use of key bases and closed airspace to related US aircraft; Germany ruled out military participation; France questioned the legal basis and limited involvement; and Italy blocked access to bases such as Sigonella. Others, including Belgium and Switzerland, declined meaningful help or restricted flyovers, while much of broader European opinion has leaned toward restraint and de-escalation.

Our real allies are those who reject authoritarianism and collectivist control — wherever they may be. Increasingly, they are not concentrated only in the West. Some of the most concrete resistance to Islamist authoritarianism is emerging from within the Muslim world itself, while hesitation, obstruction, and moral equivocation have come from parts of the West. The map is shifting — redrawn along lines of principle rather than geography.

First, what creates a new generation of terrorists is not strength, but perceived weakness. 10/7 created an eruption of Jew-hatred by end of day because Israel was conspicuously humiliated. The entire accepted wisdom that taking out jihadis only creates more jihadists is absolute childish tripe.

Second, 95%+ of Iranians love Israel and the U.S., and most despise not just Islamism but Islam itself. Iranians aren’t angry when each bomb lands and kills a “fellow Iranian.” They cry with joy because those “fellow Iranians” are brutal soulless Islamofascists that have oppressed and killed them for 47 years.

The reaction to all these bombs from Israel and the U.S. — to all this strength — will be boulevards named after Bibi and Trump.

But there’s a kind of strategic logic to behavior that looks irrational on the surface. We’ve seen it before.

9/11 was irrational in the same sense. Why attack civilians? It didn’t change any military balance of power. All it did was bring the overwhelming power of the U.S. down on them. Yet the psychological effect was enormous: it created the perception of American vulnerability and ignited a massive surge of confidence and recruitment across Islamist movements.

10/7 looked similarly irrational. Surely massacring civilians would generate sympathy for the victims. But the architects understood something darker about human social dynamics: humiliation of a powerful enemy generates prestige for the attacker. Their hope was that the spectacle would ignite a global intifada — and in many ways it did. Within hours, protests erupted worldwide condemning not Hamas but Israel. Jew-hatred surged, and the brutality of Hamas — itself a brutal oppressor of Gazans — faded from the narrative. The massacre became a grotesque PR event: the champion appeared knocked down, and crowds rushed to place their reputational bets on the side that seemed ascendant.

That same logic helps explain why the Islamic Republic might launch a reckless barrage of missiles across the region.

Imagine if one of those missiles had struck Burj Khalifa and caused massive destruction.
